Just bought a new 24" Display
And sadly... I went with a Dell UltraSharp 2408WFP instead of an Apple Cinema Display as was my original plan.
Even after convincing myself that paying an extra $500 or so was justifiable, I came to a brick wall when I saw the specs of the new 24“ ACD. It looks pretty cool, if you happen to have a brand new MacBook Pro. But if you have a previous one you’re out of luck and it seems Apple just doesn’t like you anymore. You see, the new display comes with a Mini DisplayPort instead of the DVI found in most laptops, and the new display cannot be connected to it. The 23” has been discontinued, so if you want an Apple Cinema Display and you don’t have a computer with a Mini DisplayPort, you have 3 options:
- Buy a new MacBook or MacBook Pro... which seems like a very stupid thing to do just to use a new display. Heck, I own a 12 month old 17“ MacBook Pro and I’m out of luck!!!
- Buy a different size... Apple’s only options are the 20”, which is too small for me; and the 30“, which is way too expensive.
- Buy from a different brand.
I chose 3.
I’ll post my experience with it once it arrives and I’ve played with it. From what I’ve read, it’s a great monitor as long as you calibrate it properly, so I’ll be using my i1Display2.
We’ll see how it goes.
