Nikon D700x in 2009?

I've never posted any "news" related articles before, and I sure don't intend to do it much in the future. There are already way too many websites dealing with that, many that I enjoy and trust. I've debated for a while if I should post this, but the discussions I've had have been so animated that I though I'd share my opinion.

Last week, Nikon Rumors posted what appears to be a leaked roadmap of Nikon's launches for 2009-2010. I don't know if it's real, but nothing in it seems too outrageous so it may be true. Either way, it's fun to speculate.

What really caught my eye was the rumored announcement of a Nikon D700x with 24.5 MP and full HD movie recording at 24 fps. If this is true, and:

  1. It comes out at a reasonable price (ie. same or less than the Canon 5D Mark II) and
  2. It's low-light performance is at least as good as the D3x,

I will definitely be getting one. I have to admit that since the 5D Mark II came out, I've been a bit jealous of the Canon guys. And while I absolutely love my D700, I really want to play with HD video on a full sensor with good glass wide open at f2.8 or f1.8. The extra megapixels are nice and will come in handy for a couple of projects I'm working on that require big prints, but for the most part it's irrelevant. It's the video that I want.

On the other hand, the guys around here are saying I'm completely crazy for wanting to "upgrade" a relatively new camera that doesn't need upgrading. I agree to a certain extent. But that video capability is too enticing to pass up. And the extra megapixels might save me a few bucks in rental gear for that project I mentioned.

Maybe I'm just trying to justify a new toy.

Totally with you on this ! I just wish they would bring it out ! I am desperate to go full frame, but the thought of getting video to boot is making me wait ! The D3s is overkill for me, would love for a Nikon equivalent of the 5d Mk II.

@ Dave: Yes, I also looked at the D3s, but agree that it's overkill. I have to say it's really annoying that the 5D MkII is there and it's pretty much exactly what I want but I can't really buy it because of my investment in Nikon lenses and speedlights. Changing it too much of a hassle. Although I've been thinking about this and could potentially sell my Nikon gear to fund the switch and it wouldn't be that bad financially. It's just a major pain and not something I really want to do. I hope a D700x or similar comes out soon.

Really cool photography on your site btw. Just spent some time looking at your stuff.

Hey Gabe thanks for looking at my site, and your kind comments. I have since taken the plunge and bought a D700, havent looked back. Full frame is great.

Now lets hope Aperture 3 comes out soon !

Dave, congratulations on the camera. The D700 is amazing and I still love mine. I ended up buying a Panasonic GF1 to play with video and as a walkaround camera. I figure I'll invest in a good DSLR with video once I'm actually good at it and in the meantime learn with the GF1 and enjoy my D700.
