Giraffe shot on film

Part of the same series of animals shot in black & white film with an old Nikon F3. I'll put them all together at some point and create a gallery, but for now I'll keep posting these photographs one at a time here.

I've said it before, but I'm really enjoying shooting with film. A couple of weeks ago I bought a film scanner so I'll be uploading some of my old stuff.

Another llama from my Nikon F3

Another one from the same film roll I shot on the Nikon F3. I love this camera. I might do a gallery with all the black & white animal photographs I've been shooting recently.

Deer in black & white, shot on film

From that same first roll I put through the Nikon F3.

In case you missed it, I explained earlier why I'm all of a sudden posting photographs of animals.

Llama in Black & White, shot on film

Another one from that same first roll I ran through the Nikon F3 I was lucky enough to win from Rob Boyer. I'm really happy with the results and the fact that I got quite a few that I really like on the same roll.

I'm really loving shooting film again and the F3 is an amazing camera. I've been collecting my thoughts as I use it and will write something once I have time to put it into something coherent. Life has been hectic these last few weeks, but I'm hoping to spend some time catching up on my photography and this site in the coming weeks.

I'll also post new images as soon from the F3. I sent a couple more rolls to get developed and was supposed to pick them up last week but didn't get around to it. I'll get it tomorrow though. That's one thing about film. It takes time to actually get your photographs. One roll took me almost 3 weeks to finish shooting because I wanted to make every frame count. Then I sent it to the lab for processing and scanning, which took another 4 days. Then I've missed closing time so there go another few days.

Totally worth it though.

Eagle in Black & White, shot on film

Another photograph from my first roll of TRI-X 400 shot on the Nikon F3. I explained why I'm posting photographs of animals all of a sudden in a previous post, so I won't repeat myself here. I'll just say shooting film again has been a lot of fun.

More film photographs - A Rhinoceros

This is shot number 5 from the first roll of film I ran through the Nikon F3. Shot's 2, 3, and 4 were just more zebras, but came out pretty lame.

If you've been reading my site you may be wondering why the heck I'm suddenly posting photographs of animals. It's a good question, since I haven't done it before and I'm by no means an animal or wildlife photographer. I actually think I quite suck at it.

However, there's a good reason for it.

As you may know, about 18 months ago I had a baby girl and I photographed the birth. That experience made me realise that I didn't shoot my family and friends enough, and since then I've been obsessed with photographing every single moment. Sometimes I go for a walk with her and, since I carry my camera everywhere, point at things and ask her if she want's a photo of it. She usually says yes.

I also read books to her at night, and a bunch of them are about animals. She's learning the sounds they make by looking at the photographs.

So, I took her to a zoo and started firing away. I'm now thinking I should do a bunch of them and make a book of animals to show her. So here we are. Shooting a bunch of animals for her.

First shot with the Nikon F3

Not the best photograph, but it's shot number 1 from the Nikon F3 I won from Rob Boyer, so I decided to publish it. It was shot with TRI-X 400 and scanned at a cheap lab. I have a few other photographs that don't completely suck from that roll that I'll post in the next few days.

I'll also expand on the experience on shooting film on the F3, but for now I'll just say I love it. It's a great camera and I really enjoy shooting film again. There really is something about shooting film that's difficult to explain. It makes me shoot more deliberately as every shot counts, so going through a roll of film could take a while because I don't want to "waste" shots. Of course, that doesn't mean that every shot end up being a great photograph. Far from it. But it does mean that at least every one could be a great one instead of just firing a thousand shots without giving it much thought.

Or maybe I'm just being way too cautious and should just experiment and allow myself to screw up intentionally more often.

On being "distracted" with film

Rob Boyer makes a good point on why it's a good thing to be "distracted" with film.

Yes, I am distracted with film. Which in turn focuses me on making pictures instead of figuring out what digital crap I “need” next.

My shot at winning a Nikon F3

If you've been reading my blog, you know I love shooting with film. I enjoy having to think hard about each frame because there are only 24 available, so each one has to count. I love being in a darkroom developing film, trying new mixtures of developer/time/temperature out (I've been getting into caffenol!). I find it fascinating to try out new types of film to see what they look like (currently obsessed with Ilford Delta 3200). I do have to admit I don't enjoy scanning one bit, so I send my stuff to people that can do it much better than I can.

I currently own a Holga (which I used to shoot the photograph above), a Konica C35, and 2 Nikon EM's that I bought on ebay but turned out to be crap. I've always wanted a Leica M6 (or M-whatever really). And I really want a proper film SLR. It has to be a Nikon as I already own Nikon glass and accessories.

So, this brings me to my shot at winning a Nikon F3. Rob Boyer is giving one away over at his blog and this is my entry.

By the way, Rob is also an Apple Aperture user and has a lot to share on his site. I've been following him for a while now and have learned heaps from him. If you visit my website because of my writings on Aperture be sure to visit Rob's site as well.

Two more photos developed with Caffenol C

Here are 2 more photographs from the same test roll as my post from a few days ago developed with Caffenol, a concoction using coffee and vitamin C. I really like the results.

A 35mm film photograph developed with caffenol

As I mentioned in my previous post, I've been playing with film a lot lately and really enjoying it. Last week, we decided to experiment with a homemade developer called Caffenol that uses coffee, washing soda, and vitamin C instead of the normal chemicals. It's quite strange but it actually works!

The image above of my daughter was taken on a very old Konica C35 using Kodak Professional TRI-X 400 and developed using Caffenol C. The only adjustments were slight levels and sharpening in Apple Aperture.

It's not the most artistic photograph, but I think it looks pretty good (and not just because it's my daughter). There's something about film that's just cool.

Since I was introduced to Caffenol by Michael Waite, I've been googling it and it seems there's a fairly big community around it. I'll keep experimenting with it.
