Photographer: Dennis Darling

Wayne Ford in his introduction to photographer Dennis Darling:

In a photographic world were online presence and social media have become common place, American Dennis Darling is a rarity; with no website devoted to his four-decades of work or Twitter feed to promote his latest commissions or projects. In fact search the internet for his name and you will return few mentions beyond that of his education — he received a BVA from Georgia State University and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago — and his current role as course director of the photojournalism program at the University of Texas, Austin, where he has taught since 1981.

I'd never heard of Dennis Darling. I discovered him this week via Wayne Ford's site and I really like his work. I encourage you to click through and have a look.

Photographer: Spencer Tunick

If you've never heard of Spencer Tunick, you need to check him out. I love his work. His official bio is:

Artist Spencer Tunick has been documenting the live nude figure in public, with photography and video, since 1992. Since 1994 he has organized over 75 temporary site-specific installations in the United States and abroad. Tunick's installations encompass dozens, hundreds or thousands of volunteers; and his photographs are records of these events. The individuals en masse, without their clothing, grouped together metamorphose into a new shape. The bodies extend into and upon the landscape like a substance. These grouped masses which do not underscore sexuality become abstractions that challenge or reconfigure one's views of nudity and privacy. The work also refers to the complex issue of presenting art in permanent or temporary public spaces.

Photographers: Couples in a vacuum by Photographer Hal

Interesting photographic series at The Curious Brain by Tokio based Photographer Hal. He photographs couples in a vacuum inside plastic bags. You have to see it for yourself as it's difficult to visualise. The photographs are both beautiful and disturbing at the same time.

Photographer: Misha de Ridder

Photographing landscapes is difficult. Producing images truly interesting and captivating is definitely not an easy task and in my opinion few photographers can pull it off. Misha de Ridder, who I discovered today via wayneford's posterous has a beautiful series that I found particularly enthralling.

This line from the article sums it up nicely:

‘My work is made from the perspective of someone who lives in a city and wants to know how to relate to wilderness,’ writes de Ridder, ‘to the greatness of nature and in the end to the nature of his own existence and inevitable death.

Storytelling with Daniel Milnor

I'm a fan of Daniel Milnor's work. Unfortunately I don't remember how I came across this video so can't provide a source. Someone I follow via RSS must've posted it and I sent a link to myself to remind me to watch it, but I didn't write where I saw it as I normally do.

Anyway, it's an interesting insight into the way Milnor works. In this video he shoots old-style, which I love. By that I mean he shoots black & white film with a Leica, and to me that combination sounds like heaven. I also like his approach, where as he says in the video, he's shooting sequences and not necessarily looking for that one shot. He focuses on telling the story that's unfolding before him and this shows in his work. While each photograph is beautiful in its own right, it's the unified body of work that makes it truly brilliant.

It's worth exploring his portfolio and his blog.

UPDATE: Also worth exploring are his Blurb books. Really cool.
