Ultra Sleek Button-Less Camera

Interesting design for an Ultra Sleek Button-Less Camera. Jacob Paul Wiegmann at My Modern Met writes:

The Rotor 360 camera, designed by Charlie Nghiem, is beautifully simple in its execution of design. By removing the buttons for menu options and instead replacing them with a rotating column of choices, Nghiem has improved the interface of the modern digital camera.

It looks beautiful, although I'm not sure what it would be like to use in real life. If those dials are easy to rotate when you need to but don't move easily by accident, it could be a winner. I'm all for manual controls in my cameras.

The Throwable Panoramic Ball Camera

The Throwable Panoramic Ball Camera by Jonas Pfeil looks amazing. It's a ball that holds "36 fixed-focus 2 megapixel mobile phone camera modules", it's padded with foam, and has an accelerometer to help it determine the highest point. The explain it as:

The camera is thrown into the air and captures an image at the highest point of flight - when it is hardly moving. The camera takes full spherical panoramas, requires no preparation and images are taken instantaneously. It can capture scenes with many moving objects without producing ghosting artifacts and creates unique images.

Check out the site and watch the video, it shows the ball camera and has a few examples. I'd like to get my hands on one of these.

The iPhone camera gets even better

Features camera quickaccessI'm a bit of a geek and a bit of an Apple fan, so I was exited about the announcement earlier today. And if you've been following my site you'll know that I really like taking photographs with my iPhone. So, I'm really happy about all that Apple has coming, but what's really cool (and relevant to this site) is the new improvements to the iPhone camera app.

The grid lines and other composition things are nice, but what's really great is the "quick access" features they added.

With iOS 5 we'll be able to get to the camera straight from the Lock screen. This is a huge time saver, which is important when you want to catch a moment happening right in front of you. Currently, we have to swipe to unlock, find the Camera app, and tap it. Three steps. If I understand this new feature correctly, now all we'll need to do is tap the camera icon. One step.

The other very cool feature is using the volume-up button as the shutter. This feel way more natural and will make the iPhone feel more like a true compact camera than a phone with a camera.
