Fatima for People of the Globe

I may have posted this one before but for some strange reason I felt like putting it up now. Fatima is from Venezuela and she was actually the first person I photographed for the People of the Globe project back in 2005. In fact, it was after shooting her the first time that I decided to do the project. I haven't seen her in a while, but hopefully we'll shoot together again.

Just a test of the new slideshow feature in squarespace

The folks at Squarespace, where I host this site, have just released a new slideshow feature that basically takes any gallery and lets you put it into a presentation like the above. I thought I'd give it a try.

UPDATE: I originally had it to auto-play, but it looked like one of those old animated gif ads. Too much unprompted movement on a website is annoying. So I changed it to manually advance. Just click on the arrows.

Anne from Canada for People of the Globe #2

Anne from Canada for People of the Globe

Another shot of Anne (previous here) from the same shoot not too long ago. I'm pretty sure this one will be on the final edit.

Eugenia for People of the Globe

20091223 eugenia ukraine 2

This past week I've been going through this shoot with Eugenia from 2009 and found a few photographs I really like that I'd left labeled as "to edit". She's from Ukraine and a perfect fit for the People of the Globe project. I've posted previous shots from her before.

It's really good discovering old gems you hadn't thought about in a while.

On a different note, today I removed the "You might also like:" section at the bottom of my posts. I was using LinkWithin to show related posts, and it was actually driving additional page views. However, I felt it also added a lot of noise to the site and it just felt too busy. I may bring it back at a later stage, but for now I'm leaning towards keeping the site as clean and simple as possible. I know I've been mucking around with the look too often lately, but I'm enjoying it. I think of it more as an evolution. Plus I get to learn, which is always fun.

Banze for People of the Globe

Portrait of Banze from Mozambique for People of the Globe

This is Banze from Mozambique for People of the Globe. He was a student at the same university I was studying a masters in 2008 and I met him through a mutual friend. We shot in the university campus in the middle of the day while in between classes.

One thing I liked about photographing Banze was that he was really proud of his country. The day before I asked him to bring along something that was related to Mozambique to see if we could incorporate into the photographs. He showed up with a cool necklace in traditional African colours with a pendant with the shape of the continent. His cap and t-shirt also had African symbols. He is a genuinely nice guy.

Tetchie for People of the Globe

Tetchie for People of the Globe

Tetchie is Australian of Filipino and German background. I made this photograph about 3 years ago in a very quick and informal shoot. The whole thing must've taken about 45 minutes and we got about 15 keepers.

I posted this one also on the People of the Globe website yesterday.

Gabriella for People of the Globe

Gabriella from Sweeden for People of the GlobeI'm sure I've posted this one before. It's one of the earliest photographs I did for the People of the Globe project back in 2006. I've shot with Gabriella after this, but for some reason I really like this photo.

Maree for People of the Globe

Maree from Croatia for People of the GlobeI'm changing the layout and design of my website to accommodate bigger photographs. Looking at the visitor statistics I can see that by far, most people coming here are using bigger monitors so I thought it was time for a change.

Speaking of change, I'm also thinking about changing the direction of the site. I'll still write about Aperture and other photography related things, but I'll be posting more of my photographs more regularly. I've written about how I feel about sharing more of what you do and not only your very best work. I wrote that in January 2010 and ended with "I still don't know". Well, it's been over a year and I still don't know exactly how I feel. So I've decided I'll be posting a lot more and just see what happens.

Eugenia for People of the Globe

Eugenia from Ukraine for People of the GlobeI'm not sure why, but I really like this photograph. It's not anything I did though, it's all her. Eugenia is beautiful, but there's something else. Her features are really unique and her attitude in this photograph is amazing. I've shot with her twice and both times have been great.
